From designing historical terrace houses in Sydney, Australia to designing tiny homes, I am an expert in small space design. The following tips and tricks can make any small space feel light and airy.

1. Keep Objects Out of the Corners

When you enter a new room, your eyes always go to the corners. Intuitively, you might think that placing big objects in the corners is a more efficient use of space. While this is true, it psychologically makes the room feel smaller. Since the size of the room is defined by the corners, placing big objects in the corners reduces the visual room size.

2. Keep Furniture Away From the Walls if Possible

If the furniture is so big that it needs to be placed against the wall, it is too big. You want space to flow on all sides of the furniture. A couch placed against the wall will make the room boundaries feel confined. Furniture placed against the wall effectively pushes the wall in, because you can never go behind it. Even though the couch occupies the same space in the middle of the room as it does against the wall, the room will feel more open.

3. Utilize Borrowed Space
