I was a digital nomad for six months as a freelance architectural drafter and tiny house designer. I left a stable well paying job with a promising future for a very questionable future at best. I had no idea what I was doing, and learned some hard lessons. If you are about to become a digital nomad, here are some common pitfalls.
Staying in Hostels
If you’ve never travelled alone for an extended period of time, you cannot anticipate how lonely it can be. At first, hostels seemed to be the antidote for this. You always have like minded people to talk to and people to explore with. But how like minded are hostel guests really? Most people that stay in hostels are tourists, or young people searching for their life calling. Surrounding yourself with people who haven’t found their purpose yet is a surefire way to lose confidence in your own business.
In a hostel, the probability of having a difficult roommate is magnified by tenfold. Imagine trying to build a business in the crossfire of other people’s drama? In the world of perpetual tourists, some people run low on money or get stuck in life and end up laying in bed all day. While this is a sad situation to see your fellow travelers burn out, this unproductive mentality will rub off on you.
