It’s Only as Unique as You Make it Out to Be
I admit it, when I flew one-way to Mexico City after quitting my stable job, I felt like I was on to something great. Since my early 20’s I knew that middle of the road Western society was a pointless soul crushing existence. You are told from a young age to comply, get a degree, get a stable well paying job, “invest” in a house, and take no risks. Comfort is addicting, and fear of going broke or being lonely stops people from making a major life change. I had tried and failed several times to deviate from the path of being an “upstanding citizen.” Would becoming a digital nomad help me forge a new life path?
From the day I arrived in Mexico, I was instantly propelled into a world of digital nomads. The cafes in Mexico City were full of Americans on video calls. I talked to countless digital nomads. Those who were starting out seemed manically happy. Crypto traders with their laptops on the beach told me to buy Ethereum to $10,000. I would order 3 beers and tacos for lunch, and as long as I was meeting deadlines, no one cared that I was buzzed while on the clock. The Mexican sun hitting my face, the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, and not having to worry about anything was intoxicating. This party seemed like it would go on forever.
