I think ppl want career growth in terms of being compensated for their value and the opportunity to work on what interests them. But as far as promotions go, no one cares that you had X position at X company. Your social status rarely goes beyond the 4 walls of the office. Companies could do better to promote personal goals, so that your social status doesn't erase when you leave.
