…n. Pretty much nobody spoke any English at all. At that point, I only knew a few words of Japanese. Within 16 months, I passed Level 2 (the second-highest level) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). A few years later, I passed Level 1, the highest grade.

It sounds like moving to a rural area is THE MOVE for language learners. There's a 0% chance of getting comfortable in the expat bubble, which I can imagine becoming a crutch in large cities. Great article! And congrats on everything you accomplished!
