I've quit and come back to architecture 3 times for this same reason. The clients have their own drafting software, so the design side gets devalued. But there's still money in codes and regulations, because no one wants to read dry text. So I use what I'm good at to subsidize my adventures. Your article was great and it is very true you might not ever get to visit your passion until you do what you're good at first.
