The Case for Not Creating Photo Realistic Renderings

In the era of BIM software, it is a myth that renderings take a long time to produce. There is still a “cost per view” misconception that some rendering companies still adhere to. The reality is that all the work goes into building and detailing out the 3D model + landscaping. Once you drop the model in the software, you only have to adjust a few parameters. Taking 100 stills is not going to cost much more than taking 3 stills. But irrespective of the cost, producing photo realistic renderings can create unintended consequences.

Many architects and design professionals have not upgraded from 2D drafting software. They are wondering if the world is moving in the direction of 3D, do I need to upgrade?

Clients Get Hung up on Details That are Not Integral to the Design.

For example, window and door trim, door hardware, and paint color. The client may be unable to decide whether they do not like the materials or they do not like the overall layout. The layout might be perfect, but the wrong cabinet door style might make them hate the plan anyway. Imagine redrawing the floor plan because the client does not like blue cabinets or grids in the windows? As much as you think you will talk the client into simply swapping out materials and colors, once they decide they do not like something, they will want to change
