What my Mushroom Trip in San José del Pacifico Taught Me about Life
Here is the podcast episode where I talk about my trip in depth:
San José del Pacífico is a high mountain village 8,000 ft (2,440 m) in Oaxaca, Mexico where psilocybin mushrooms are legal. There are no ATMs, and it is not possible to book most hotel reservations online. You show up in a shuttle van and hope that there are rooms available. The locals will help you find alternative accommodation if your intended guesthouse is full. I went in the Summer, when the mushrooms were freshly picked.
3 weeks earlier, I bought a one-way flight to Mexico City to become a digital nomad. From a friend’s recommendation, I found out about San José del Pacífico, and decided to go. This is why you do not over plan travel. The best things to happen will be unexpected. On my first of two trips, I ran into some healers in a cafe who invited me to do a ceremony in their hotel. I was impressed with the level of care in decorating their room with candles and a rug for the ceremony. It really felt like a home.
